LAHORE, September 13: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 13 to 17, banning public gatherings, rallies, processions, sit-ins and demonstrations amid what authorities described as serious security threats.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, gatherings of five or more people at public places, roads and open spaces will remain prohibited during the period.
The government said the restrictions were imposed after law enforcement and intelligence agencies reported urgent security concerns and warned that militant groups could seek to target large public gatherings.
Officials said rallies, protests, sit-ins and processions involving large crowds could present an easier target in the event of a terrorist attack.
Weapons and Mobilisation Also Restricted
The notification also bans carrying or displaying weapons in public places.
Authorities have additionally prohibited attempts to encourage or mobilise people to participate in unlawful gatherings during the enforcement period.
The provincial government said the measures were introduced under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, to protect public safety, peace and property.
Weddings, Funerals and Places of Worship Exempt
The restrictions will not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship.
Courts, government institutions and events held with formal permission are also exempt from the ban.
The notification further states that the restrictions will not apply to law enforcement personnel, intelligence agencies and security officials performing official duties.
The Punjab Home Department said the temporary restrictions were necessary in view of intelligence assessments and requests from security agencies for immediate preventive measures.
Authorities said protecting public life and property remained the provincial government’s top priority.
