Punjab public transport fares drop up to 25% after diesel price cut

LAHORE — Punjab public transport fares drop up to 25% after a significant reduction in diesel prices, offering immediate financial relief to commuters across the province. Transport operators voluntarily implemented the fare cuts following a Rs135 per litre decrease in diesel rates, although an official notification from the Punjab Transport Department is still awaited.

The fare reductions are effective from today and apply to various modes of public transport operating throughout Punjab. The move is expected to ease travel costs for daily commuters, particularly workers and students who rely heavily on road transport.

Goods transport rates also reduced

In addition to passenger fares, goods transport associations have announced substantial decreases in freight charges. One association reported a reduction of up to 40%, while the Mini Mazda Goods Transport Association confirmed a 25% cut in its rates. These adjustments are likely to lower transportation costs for businesses and may contribute to stabilizing prices of essential commodities.

Further reductions under consideration

Officials from the Punjab Transport Department have scheduled a meeting with transporters to assess the possibility of additional fare reductions. The discussions aim to align fare structures with fuel price trends and ensure that the benefits of the diesel price cut are fully passed on to the public.

The decrease in diesel prices is a key factor influencing transportation costs in Pakistan, where road-based travel and logistics play a central role in economic activity. Any sustained reduction in fuel prices can have a broader impact on inflation and supply chain expenses.
