Punjab Extends Private Car Fitness Deadline to Dec 31

LAHORE: The Punjab government has extended the deadline for private car owners to obtain vehicle fitness certification until December 31, 2026, giving motorists additional time to comply with the province’s expanding inspection programme.

Lahore is the first city included in the rollout, while the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department has also confirmed that new testing stations are being established to increase inspection capacity.

Lahore First in Rollout

The programme is being introduced in Lahore before being expanded to other parts of Punjab.

As the first phase gets underway in the provincial capital, private vehicle owners in Lahore will be among the first affected by the broader inspection drive.

The addition of more testing stations is intended to make the certification process more accessible before enforcement expands further.

More Testing Centres Being Added

The Transport Department says it is setting up new testing stations in Lahore amid concerns over whether existing facilities are sufficient to handle the city’s large number of private vehicles.

The Punjab Transport Authority’s current PVICS listing already includes a growing network of affiliated emission-testing centres across Lahore.

Which Cars Are Exempt?

The latest government notice also clarifies that relatively new private cars do not immediately require an emission certificate.

The exemption depends on the vehicle’s engine capacity and its age from the date of manufacture.

Engine CapacityEmission Certificate Not Required For
Up to 1,000ccFirst 5 years from manufacture
1,001cc to 2,000ccFirst 6 years from manufacture
Above 2,000ccFirst 7 years from manufacture

For motorists, the key change is the extension of the deadline to December 31, while Lahore remains the starting point for the first phase of the programme.

Private car owners should first check their vehicle’s engine capacity and manufacturing year to determine whether it falls within the exemption period.

Older vehicles outside those age limits must comply with the applicable inspection requirements.

Officially notified emission-testing charges currently begin at Rs500 for cars up to 1,000cc and increase according to engine capacity.

With more testing facilities being added in Lahore and the deadline extended to the end of the year, motorists now have additional time to complete the process.

The policy direction, however, remains clear: private vehicle fitness and emission compliance are becoming a more formal part of Punjab’s vehicle inspection system.
