Punjab revises practical exam marking system for board students

LAHORE — The Government of Punjab has introduced major changes to the marking system for board practical examinations, withdrawing the authority of examiners at examination centers to award full marks.

Under the new policy, the written portion of practical exams will be evaluated through a centralized marking system by the respective education boards across Punjab. Officials said the move aims to ensure greater transparency and merit in practical examination assessments.

Previously, examiners present at exam centers had broader authority in awarding marks during practical tests. Authorities said the practice sometimes allowed recommendations or preferential marking to influence results.

New marking structure

According to the revised policy, the 30 marks allocated for practical examinations will now be divided into two components.

The written answer sheet of the practical exam will be checked directly by the boards, while examiners at the centers will award only limited marks for viva and practical performance.

Officials said this change significantly restricts the authority of center-based examiners and shifts the main evaluation responsibility to the boards.

The new system will apply to practical examinations in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Studies across all educational boards in the province.

Aim to ensure merit and transparency

Muzammil Mahmood, chairman of the Task Force Committee for Boards, said that the revised policy would improve fairness in the examination system.

He stated that merely formal or oral practicals would no longer be acceptable and that marks in practical examinations would now be awarded strictly on merit.

Officials said the changes are part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and standardization in the province’s examination system.
