RAWALPINDI — Punjab Minister for Agriculture Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said the government’s goal is to empower farmers and citizens with knowledge and tools for modern agriculture during a visit to Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University (PMAS-AAUR) on Wednesday.
Kirmani, accompanied by Secretary Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, reviewed ongoing research projects and met with university leadership, including Vice Chancellor Qamar-uz-Zaman, along with faculty members and administrators.
The visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the Agriculture Department and the university to promote sustainable farming practices, technological innovation and farmer outreach across Punjab.
Focus on hydroponics and urban farming
The minister praised the university’s work in hydroponics and controlled environment agriculture, describing it as critical for improving food security in arid regions.
Highlighting the proposed “2-Marla Rooftop Hydroponic Project,” Kirmani said the Punjab government aims to convert urban and peri-urban spaces into productive green areas. He stated that rooftop hydroponic systems would enable families to grow vegetables at home, support healthy living and reduce household expenses.
He added that the project would be finalized on an urgent basis and presented to the chief minister for approval.
Strengthening research and farmer outreach
Kirmani directed university leadership and the Agriculture Department to expand cooperation on joint research, technology transfer and farmer awareness programs. He said the broader objective is to equip both farmers and non-farming citizens with practical tools for modern agriculture.
Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo said the department is working to make the hydroponic initiative accessible on a subsidized basis to encourage grassroots adoption. He noted that coordination with agricultural universities across Punjab has already led to the implementation of several joint projects.
Vice Chancellor Qamar-uz-Zaman thanked the provincial leadership for their support and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to applied research, capacity building and dissemination of affordable, locally adaptable technologies for small-scale farmers.
University officials said PMAS-AAUR is currently engaged in major research initiatives, including modern laboratory development and faculty-led patent projects aimed at supporting sustainable agriculture in Punjab.
