LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the introduction of separate religious education subjects for non-Muslim students, allowing them to study their own faith instead of Islamic Studies or general Ethics. The move is aimed at improving inclusivity in the province’s education system and ensuring minority students receive instruction aligned with their beliefs.

The decision, implemented through the Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), applies to both public and private schools across Punjab. It primarily affects Christian students, with newly approved Christian Religious Education textbooks to be taught from grades 1 to 8 and grades 11 and 12.

Textbooks approved and rollout plan

According to an official notification issued by PECTAA, the approved textbooks have been developed by Educating Youth Publication. These materials will now be incorporated into the curriculum for minority students who opt for religious education specific to their faith.

Education authorities said the rollout will be uniform across schools, ensuring that non-Muslim students are no longer required to take subjects that do not reflect their religious background.

Focus on inclusive education

Officials described the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening minority rights within the education sector. The policy aligns with broader efforts by the Punjab government to promote inclusive learning environments and equal academic opportunities for students from diverse religious communities.

By introducing faith-specific subjects, authorities aim to address long-standing concerns about representation and relevance in the curriculum for minority groups.
