LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, along with her father and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, chaired a crucial meeting aimed at improving transport infrastructure in the province, including an underground train project in Lahore and implementation of metro bus projects in three cities of Punjab.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for careful planning of the Lahore Metro Rail Project and sought a detailed plan in this regard. Further, decisions were taken regarding metro bus projects in three cities of Punjab detailing various aspects of transport, including allotment of bikes for students.
Nawaz Sharif directed the authorities to increase the number of motorcycles available to students and ensure that the monthly installments for these bikes are kept to a minimum to reduce the financial burden on students. He reiterated that it is the government’s duty to support students financially.
In line with these guidelines, it has been announced that 19,000 petrol bikes and 1,000 electric bikes will be provided to students with the relevant license on interest-free monthly installments. The installment amount for petrol bikes will be less than Rs 5,000 while for electric bikes it will be less than Rs 10,000.
In addition, a quota system was established to ensure equal opportunities for male and female students, with 50% allocation in cities and 70% quota for male and 30% female students in villages.
In addition, plans have been outlined to operate 27 all-electric buses in Lahore, in line with the government’s efforts to promote green transport solutions.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the authorities to announce the receipt of applications for the bicycle program before Eid, which will facilitate wide participation in the initiative and ensure timely distribution of bicycles to eligible students across Punjab.
