Punjab offers free public transport, fuel relief to offset rising petrol prices

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced free public transport across major cities along with targeted fuel subsidies for farmers and motorcyclists, aiming to ease the impact of rising petrol prices on commuters and household expenses.

Under the initiative, passengers will not be charged fares on services including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus and Green Electric Bus. The move is designed to lower daily commuting costs and encourage a shift towards public transport amid increasing fuel expenses.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the relief package focuses on sectors most affected by higher fuel prices, particularly transport and agriculture.

Free transport to ease daily commuting costs

The decision to make urban transport free is expected to provide immediate relief to commuters who rely on public transit for work and daily travel.

Officials said the measure could also help reduce pressure on private fuel consumption by encouraging more people to use public transport services.

Fuel subsidies for farmers and motorcyclists

As part of the package, farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs100 per litre per acre to support agricultural activity and manage input costs.

Motorcyclists will also receive a Rs100 subsidy on up to 20 litres of fuel for registered bikes, offering targeted support to daily commuters who depend on two-wheelers.

Relief linked to recent fuel price increase

The measures follow a sharp rise in petroleum prices, with petrol reaching Rs458.41 per litre and high-speed diesel Rs520.35. The increase is expected to affect transport fares and the cost of essential goods across the country.

Punjab officials said the provincial relief package is aimed at cushioning these effects, particularly for low- and middle-income groups.

Focus on managing economic pressure

Authorities said the initiative comes in response to global economic pressures and rising international oil prices, which continue to influence domestic fuel costs.

The chief minister said the government would continue efforts to support citizens during the current economic conditions and encouraged greater use of public transport to reduce individual expenses.
