LAHORE, April 13, 2026: The Punjab government has set the official wheat support price at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms (per maund) under its Wheat Policy 2026, aiming to ensure fair returns for farmers and maintain stability in the province’s food supply.

According to official announcements, the price has been fixed as a benchmark rate to support wheat growers and strengthen strategic reserves. The policy is designed to balance the interests of farmers, consumers, and the private sector involved in procurement and storage.

The provincial government stated that the decision reflects its commitment to safeguarding farmers’ incomes while ensuring the availability of wheat in the market. Officials noted that the benchmark price would guide procurement and market transactions during the harvesting season.

The Wheat Policy 2026 also focuses on improving the management of strategic wheat reserves, with an increased role for the private sector in storage and supply operations. This approach is intended to reduce fiscal pressure on the government while maintaining efficient distribution mechanisms.

Agriculture experts believe that the fixed price of Rs3,500 per maund will provide a level of certainty to farmers, enabling them to better plan their production and manage input costs. However, market prices may fluctuate depending on demand and supply conditions across different regions.

The announcement comes ahead of the wheat procurement season, when farmers begin harvesting their crops across Punjab. Authorities have indicated that measures are being taken to ensure smooth procurement and avoid market disruptions.

Wheat remains a key staple crop in Pakistan, and Punjab, being the country’s largest wheat-producing province, plays a central role in ensuring national food security. The latest price policy is expected to support both production levels and the broader agricultural economy.
