Punjab expects bumper potato harvest as CM Maryam Nawaz announces export plan

LAHORE — Punjab is set to record a bumper potato harvest of around 12 million metric tonnes (MMT) this year, representing a 25 percent increase compared to last year’s production, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Tuesday.

Addressing concerns over potential oversupply and falling farm-gate prices, the chief minister said the Punjab government is working closely with the federal government to open new export markets to ensure price stability and fair returns for farmers.

She said a breakthrough agreement with Kazakhstan has been achieved, marking a significant first step toward absorbing surplus potato production. Efforts are also underway to secure access to additional international markets in the coming weeks.

Export strategy to manage surplus

According to the chief minister, the export initiatives are aimed at preventing losses to farmers by ensuring excess produce is directed toward overseas markets rather than depressing domestic prices.

Officials said the bumper harvest reflects improved agricultural practices and favourable growing conditions, but requires proactive market management to protect growers’ incomes.

The Punjab government said it will continue coordinating with relevant federal authorities and trade bodies to facilitate exports and strengthen supply chains, particularly for perishable crops such as potatoes.

Focus on farmer protection

Maryam Nawaz said safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods remains a top priority of the provincial government, adding that timely policy interventions are essential to balance production gains with market demand.

The export drive is part of broader efforts to stabilise agricultural markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and support sustainable income growth for farmers across the province.
