LAHORE: A steering committee meeting chaired by Punjab Energy Minister Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar reviewed progress on electricity infrastructure and issued new directives aimed at improving safety and organisation of the power distribution system.
The meeting, held on the directions of the Chief Minister Punjab, assessed implementation of previous decisions and performance of departments over the past three months. Officials said the review is part of ongoing efforts to modernise electricity infrastructure and enhance public safety.
The provincial minister directed that electricity meters be installed within proper metal frames to improve safety standards. He also ordered immediate repair or removal of damaged and tilted electricity poles to prevent potential hazards.
He further instructed that underground electrical installations be made mandatory in all new housing societies, and asked departments to nominate focal persons to improve coordination and ensure timely implementation of decisions.
Focus on consumer protection and service delivery
Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar emphasized that electricity connections should not be disconnected without due notice, directing authorities to provide consumers with reasonable time before taking action.
He warned against unjust measures, stating that consumer rights must be safeguarded while improving service delivery.
Officials were also instructed to enhance departmental performance, with a comprehensive report to be presented to the Chief Minister Punjab in the coming days.
Progress on infrastructure projects in Lahore
During the briefing, officials said work is underway to upgrade electricity infrastructure across 33 major roads and 22 markets in Lahore.
Installation of underground ducts over 22 kilometres is in progress on Ferozepur Road, while development work continues on Queens Road, Jail Road, Charing Cross, Nazaria-e-Pakistan Road and Khayaban-e-Jinnah.
Authorities also reported that alignment of electricity poles and meters, along with removal of unnecessary wiring, is being completed in six major markets.
Inspection of 898 commercial buildings in Lahore and 1,895 across Punjab has also been carried out as part of the initiative.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Energy Department and other relevant institutions, with representatives from various departments participating both in person and via video link.
