Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday led the province’s first artificial intelligence (AI) training session for members of the provincial cabinet, marking a shift toward greater use of digital tools in governance, policymaking, and public administration.
The workshop, titled Empowering Punjab with AI, was held in Lahore and focused on how artificial intelligence can support decision-making, administrative reforms, and service delivery. Officials said the initiative is intended to modernise government operations and prepare the provincial leadership for technology-driven governance.
Experts from Google for Education briefed cabinet members on the practical use of AI tools, including data analysis, policy summaries, and sector-specific applications. Ministers were also introduced to Google’s AI platform Gemini for official and administrative work.

During the session, the chief minister approved measures to expand the use of artificial intelligence in the education sector, including making AI learning mandatory in Punjab’s schools. She also approved the establishment of a Google Tech Valley Digital Transformation Advisory Board to guide future digital initiatives.
Officials said the programme would extend beyond the cabinet, with a master training initiative planned for 3,000 teachers across the province. Under the School Education Department, more than 300,000 student IDs will be created, while 200,000 students and 2,000 teachers linked to the Punjab Education Foundation are expected to receive AI and digital skills training.
The meeting was also informed that 1,000 scholarships would be awarded through 10 organisations to promote digital journalism and media innovation. Members of the Google delegation welcomed Punjab’s digital direction and described the government’s decision to declare 2026 as the Year of Youth as a step toward preparing young people for future technology-driven opportunities.
