Lahore, October 12, 2026: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has introduced new food safety regulations for school, college and university canteens across the province, banning the sale of several food and beverage items considered unsuitable for educational settings.

Under the new rules, the sale of carbonated drinks, energy drinks and artificially flavoured beverages has been prohibited in educational institutions. Products containing Chinese salt (monosodium glutamate), cotton candy, gola ganda, tobacco products and vapes have also been declared prohibited.

The regulations apply to schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions. Food businesses operating within a 100-metre radius of educational institutions will also be required to comply with the applicable rules.

Green, Yellow And Red Food Categories Introduced

The Punjab Food Authority has introduced a three-category system to promote healthier eating habits among students and discourage the consumption of foods with low nutritional value.

Under the new classification:

  • Green Category: Nutrient-rich and healthier food items will receive priority placement on canteen menus.
  • Yellow Category: These items will be listed after green-category foods.
  • Red Category: Items placed in this category will not be permitted in canteens, cafeterias or mess facilities at educational institutions.

The new framework aims to improve food quality and encourage educational institutions to make healthier options more accessible to students.

The regulations are intended to strengthen food safety standards across educational settings and promote better dietary choices among young people. Food businesses operating within the designated areas will be expected to follow the authority’s requirements.
