ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Climate Change and Member of the National Assembly Shezra Mansab Khan has called for urgent action to protect Pakistan’s glaciers, snow reserves, and mountain ecosystems, warning that the country’s long-term water security depends on the preservation of its cryospheric resources.

In a message issued on World Environment Day, the minister highlighted the growing environmental challenges posed by glacier melt and changing snowfall patterns, which directly affect the Indus River system and millions of people who rely on it for water, agriculture, and livelihoods.

Concerns Over Water Security

In a joint statement with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and the Mountain and Glacier Protection Organization (MGPO), Shezra Mansab Khan emphasized the importance of the ongoing Decade of Cryospheric Sciences in addressing climate-related challenges.

She noted that Pakistan’s mountain regions play a vital role in maintaining the country’s water resources and stressed the need for collective efforts to protect glaciers and snow-covered landscapes.

“Mountain regions serve as a lifeline for our water security,” she said, adding that greater attention must be given to safeguarding snow reserves, glaciers, and vulnerable communities.

Support for Community-Based Climate Resilience

The minister also acknowledged the work of PPAF and MGPO in promoting climate resilience and environmental awareness at the community level.

She extended World Environment Day greetings and encouraged continued collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, and local communities to address climate risks.

Rising Climate Challenges

The statement comes at a time when Pakistan is facing growing environmental pressures, including glacier retreat, changing weather patterns, water scarcity, and the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Environmental experts have repeatedly highlighted the importance of sustainable mountain ecosystem management and climate adaptation measures to reduce the impact of these challenges on communities and critical water resources.

The minister urged policymakers, stakeholders, and citizens to support efforts aimed at protecting the country’s fragile mountain environments and ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
