Bollywood actor Preity Zinta has responded to criticism on social media following her public support for education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk and students participating in ongoing protests in India.
The actor said her views were expressed independently and should not be interpreted through a political lens, stressing that speaking on public issues is a personal decision.
Actor Says Her Views Are Independent
According to Indian media reports, Zinta said she does not make public statements at anyone else’s direction and chooses her own words and opinions.
She emphasized that expressing concern over public issues should not automatically be viewed as political support for any particular group or ideology.
Appeal for Dialogue
In a recent post on X, Preity Zinta urged the Indian government to begin meaningful dialogue with Sonam Wangchuk and representatives of the protesting students.
She also appealed to Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, saying his health was as important as the cause he and the students were advocating.
Calls for Peaceful and Purposeful Protest
Responding to criticism, Zinta said she hopes legitimate student concerns receive serious attention while cautioning that no group should exploit the movement for unrelated objectives.
The protests led by Sonam Wangchuk have attracted significant public attention in recent weeks, with several members of India’s film industry also commenting on the issue.
