A policeman was martyred and a polio worker was injured when unidentified assailants targeted a polio team in Banda Daud Shah tehsil of Karak district on Monday.
The incident took place in Shakarkhel area of Teri police station when an unidentified motorcyclist fired at a group during an anti-polio campaign.
According to DIG Kohat, martyr police Irfan is responsible for providing security to the polio team. He was taken to Peshawar for polio treatment, where he was injured.
Rescue workers shifted the body of the policeman to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) for postmortem. After the attack, the police launched a search operation in the area to nab the culprits.
Karak Deputy Commissioner Shakeel Marwat confirmed that the polio campaign is continuing in the district despite the incident. The campaign aims to protect children under the age of five from paralysis.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Bannu, a polio worker named Hayatullah was injured when an unidentified man shot him at Saddar police station. Police said the injured are being treated in hospital and Officer Hayatullah and his family have joined the old feud.
The armed assailants fled the scene, said the police on Monday, launching a five-day anti-polio campaign in the district amid tight security. More than 2,500 police personnel have been deployed to ensure the peaceful conduct of the ongoing campaign.
The Deputy Commissioner has imposed Section 144 for seven days in the entire district for anti-polio campaign, ban on motorcycle riding, display of weapons and use of tinted windows in vehicles.
