The National Center of Industrial Biotechnology (NCIB) at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) organized the 1st AAUR World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Campaign on Monday, bringing together leading national experts, scientists, and students to highlight one of the world’s most pressing public health challenges. The campaign was held under the theme, “Act Now; Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future: Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance Using the One Health Approach.”
Distinguished Guests and Participation
Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman graced the event as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan, Vice Chancellor of Health Services Academy (HSA), Islamabad and Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi, Vice Chancellor IIHIR attended as Guests of Honour. Representatives from various academic institutions, healthcare organizations, research bodies and a large number of students were also participated in the event.
Address by the Vice Chancellor
While addressing, Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman underscored the urgency of collective action to combat the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance. He said that Antimicrobial Resistance is silently becoming one of the greatest threats to global health. If we fail to act today, future generations will inherit a world where common infections become untreatable and minor injuries may once again become life-threatening. He added that this campaign reflects our commitment to creating awareness, promoting responsible antibiotic use, and empowering our youth with scientific knowledge. He also commends ogranizers and NCIB team for taking this important initiative and encourage all stakeholders, from policymakers to farmers and clinicians, to work together toward a healthier, safer future.”
Expert Sessions on Antimicrobial Resistance
During the campaign, keynote speakers and subject experts delivered talks focused on the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and the global urgency required to mitigate it. They emphasized the critical importance of the One Health Approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health—particularly in the context of zoonotic disease transmission and antibiotic misuse.
Student Engagement and Awareness Activities
Participants engaged in keynote sessions, expert panel discussions, and an AMR-themed poster competition, highlighting innovative ideas and strategies to combat AMR. The event also featured an awareness walk led by the Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, where participants carried informative placards promoting responsible antibiotic use, infection prevention and coordinated national action.
