RAWALPINDI: PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) organized an international workshop titled “Olive: Health Utility, Nutrition Value & Sustainable Food Systems”, highlighting the nutritional, health, and environmental importance of olive cultivation in Pakistan.
The workshop was arranged by the university’s Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Olive Culture Scale-Up initiative. It brought together faculty members, researchers, students, farmers, and agriculture professionals to discuss the role of olives in sustainable food systems and climate-resilient agriculture.
Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR Qamar-uz-Zaman attended the event as chief guest and underscored Pakistan’s growing potential for olive cultivation. He stressed the need for research-driven practices, farmer awareness, and modern production techniques to enhance farm incomes and strengthen national food security.

Focus on nutrition, quality, and sustainability
International agricultural expert Francesco De Musso delivered key sessions on the health and nutritional value of olives, describing olive oil as a central component of healthy diets worldwide. He highlighted the role of olives in promoting balanced nutrition and long-term public health.
Muhammad Nouman, Head of Quality and Sensory Evaluation, presented an overview of olive oil quality standards and sensory evaluation techniques, explaining methods used to identify high-quality olive oil and ensure consumer confidence.
Another technical session on olive production and sustainable food systems was delivered by Muhammad Arabi Awan, who emphasized olive cultivation as a viable option for climate-resilient agriculture and environmental sustainability in Pakistan.
Advancing olive research in Pakistan
The workshop concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, followed by a vote of thanks by Muhammad Azam Khan. Participants also took part in a symbolic olive plantation activity, reinforcing the event’s focus on sustainable agricultural practices.
University officials said the workshop marked an important step toward strengthening olive research, promoting awareness among farmers and students, and supporting sustainable agricultural development across Pakistan.
