ISLAMABAD, October 23, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday approved an indicative wheat price of Rs4,500 per maund for 2027, increasing it by Rs1,000 from last year’s Rs3,500 to support farmers facing rising production costs and encourage greater wheat cultivation.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision is intended to provide financial relief to growers affected by inflation, higher fuel prices and increasing agricultural expenses.
The prime minister said the revised indicative price would offer farmers a stronger incentive to cultivate wheat while helping them recover production costs and earn reasonable profits.
Government aims to boost wheat cultivation
Shehbaz Sharif said encouraging domestic wheat production was essential to strengthening food security and reducing dependence on imports.
He noted that farmers had experienced financial difficulties in recent years because of rising agricultural input costs, while Pakistan had also been compelled to import wheat over the past two years.
The government expects the higher indicative price to encourage more farmers to sow wheat during the coming season, potentially increasing the area under cultivation and improving domestic production.
The prime minister described the decision as an important step towards stabilising the agricultural economy and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
He expressed hope that the revised price would contribute to greater agricultural productivity, improved food availability and progress towards national self-sufficiency.
Federal and provincial consultations
The prime minister acknowledged the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif during the decision-making process.
He also appreciated the consultation and cooperation of the Punjab and Sindh governments.
Shehbaz Sharif particularly thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her suggestions and support, while also acknowledging the cooperation of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The prime minister said the government remained committed to improving farmers’ economic conditions and strengthening the agricultural sector.
He expressed optimism that the revised wheat price would encourage cultivation and help deliver positive results for farmers and the broader agricultural economy in 2027.
