VIENNA — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called for enhanced economic cooperation between Pakistan and Austria, highlighting collaboration in trade, skilled labour mobility and joint efforts to curb illegal immigration during his two-day official visit.

Addressing the Pakistan-Austria Business Forum in Vienna, PM Shehbaz Sharif said Islamabad was working closely with European partners, including Austria, France and Germany, to address illegal immigration through coordinated measures. He reiterated that Pakistan opposed illegal migration and was committed to stopping the practice through structured cooperation.

The prime minister also proposed a skills-based framework to meet Europe’s labour needs, stating that Pakistan could supply trained and internationally certified workers aligned with European standards.

Focus on skilled workforce and technology

Shehbaz Sharif noted that around 60 per cent of Pakistan’s population comprises young people, underscoring the need to equip them with modern skills in information technology, artificial intelligence and digital tools.

He said structured training programmes tailored to European requirements could create legal pathways for employment while supporting economic development.

Economic engagement and bilateral talks

The prime minister highlighted sectors of potential collaboration, including mining, minerals and renewable energy. He expressed confidence that ongoing discussions with Austrian leadership would lead to expanded economic partnerships.

Earlier, PM Shehbaz Sharif was received by Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker at the Chancellery in Vienna. A formal welcome ceremony was held, during which national anthems were played and a guard of honour was presented.

The two leaders introduced their respective delegations before holding bilateral and delegation-level talks focused on strengthening Pakistan-Austria relations across economic and diplomatic areas.

The visit reflects continued engagement between Islamabad and European capitals on migration management, investment and trade cooperation.
