ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a more than one-hour phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, discussing regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran.
During the conversation, the prime minister briefed the Iranian president on Pakistan’s outreach initiatives to create conditions for peace talks, involving engagement with the US, Gulf countries, and other Islamic states. The discussion comes as Pakistan takes an active role in mediation efforts alongside Türkiye and Egypt.
Pakistan outlines mediation efforts
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the diplomatic efforts led by himself, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The premier said these efforts aim to build a conducive environment for dialogue and reduce tensions in the region. He also shared that Pakistan’s peace initiative has received “strong endorsement” from various international stakeholders.
Condemnation of attacks and expression of solidarity
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of continued Israeli strikes on Iran, including recent attacks on civilian infrastructure. He expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and offered condolences over the reported loss of more than 1,900 lives.
He also conveyed prayers for those injured and displaced in the ongoing conflict.
Iranian president appreciates Pakistan’s role
According to the PMO, President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement and emphasised the importance of building trust to enable meaningful dialogue and mediation.
The Iranian presidency also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to help reduce tensions, noting its role in facilitating communication amid the crisis.
Ongoing diplomatic engagements
Pakistan is scheduled to host foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt for discussions on regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed that indirect communication between the US and Iran is taking place through messages relayed by Pakistan, with a reported framework under consideration.
