RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI&RC) Rawalpindi has successfully performed its first kidney transplant, marking a major milestone for the newly operational transplant facility.
PKLI Board of Governors Chairman Prof Dr Saeed Akhtar said the first transplant was an important milestone for any medical institution and credited the medical team for the extensive preparation behind the procedure. He made the remarks during a press conference in Rawalpindi.
The Rawalpindi centre has now carried out two liver transplants and one kidney transplant, according to Dr Akhtar. The first kidney transplant at PKLI’s Lahore facility was performed in 2018.
App planned to facilitate patients
Dr Akhtar said PKLI was also developing an application that would allow patients to provide their information and register from home, with the aim of making access to treatment more convenient. The institute’s existing digital services also include online access to appointments and medical reports.
He said PKLI had an experienced team of specialists and facilities for advanced transplant care.
Dr Akhtar also said the institute was working towards developing a system for deceased-donor kidney transplantation, noting that such programmes operate in several countries.
Subsidised treatment for patients
According to Dr Akhtar, a significant proportion of PKLI patients receive free or heavily subsidised treatment. Recent reports quoting him said around 50% of patients receive completely free treatment, while others receive treatment at subsidised rates.
He also highlighted the role of the Chief Minister Punjab Transplant Fund in supporting deserving patients and said the institute would continue mobilising Zakat and charitable donations for healthcare support.
The Rawalpindi facility is expected to expand access to specialised kidney and liver care for patients in the twin cities and surrounding regions. PKLI’s official information lists kidney and liver transplantation among the specialist services available at its Rawalpindi branch.
