PESHAWAR — A “Safe Space for Every Child” has been established in Peshawar to support vulnerable children and strengthen child protection services, officials said on Tuesday.

The facility, set up by the Project Management Unit (PMU) Child Protection under the Directorate of Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment Department–Merged Areas, aims to provide a secure environment for children at risk of abuse, exploitation and neglect. The initiative is supported by UNICEF as part of broader child protection efforts in the region.

The centre was inaugurated in Tajabad near Board Bazaar by UNICEF Pakistan’s Chief of Child Protection Jennifer Melton, along with Child Protection Officer Bushra Ajmal. Officials from the PMU, including Program Manager Amjid Mehmood and project staff, were also present.

The facility will offer services including life skills-based education, psychosocial support, recreational activities and awareness sessions on child protection and online safety. Dedicated psychologists will provide support to children facing emotional and social challenges.

Focus on vulnerable groups

Officials said the centre is designed to support street children, refugee children, displaced families, orphans and those engaged in labour or begging. It also aims to assist girls from low-income households and other at-risk groups.

Located in a community with a high concentration of vulnerable populations, the initiative seeks to create a safe and structured space where children can access care, learn essential skills and receive referrals for additional support services.

Broader protection efforts

The programme forms part of preventive interventions in districts including Kurram, Khyber and South Waziristan. Authorities said it also focuses on engaging adolescents in awareness initiatives to promote child protection within communities.

UNICEF representatives appreciated the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting efforts aimed at improving the safety and well-being of children.
