Islamabad, August 1: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Council of Complaints Islamabad has disposed of a record 637 complaints over the past two years, according to officials during its 121st meeting held at PEMRA Headquarters.
The meeting, held on July 31, was the first since the Federal Government reconstituted the Council on July 20, 2026. It was chaired by Syed Muhammad Ali and attended by members Fauzia Shahid, Gauhar Zahid Malik, Dr Surayya Kanwal Afridi, and Kaiwan Hamid Raja.
During the meeting, the Council Secretary presented a detailed briefing on pending complaints and the Council’s performance over the last two years. Officials said the Council had resolved 637 complaints related to electronic media content as well as wage and salary issues during 38 meetings, describing it as the highest disposal rate since the establishment of PEMRA’s Councils of Complaints.
The Council also reviewed the implementation status of its previous recommendations and examined issues related to landing rights permission holders and the distribution of foreign television channels on Pakistan’s cable and distribution networks.
The Council recommended that PEMRA direct all distributors to ensure immediate, complete, and transparent compliance with Section 19 and Section 19(2) of the PEMRA Ordinance (Amended), 2007. The recommendation aims to ensure that only licensed foreign television channels are carried on distribution networks in Pakistan in the interest of fair competition, effective regulation, and public interest.
In addition, the Council adjudicated nine content-related agenda items during the meeting.
