Islamabad — In a powerful display of climate advocacy, the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), in collaboration with the German Red Cross, organised a vibrant cycling rally titled Pedal for the Planet to mark Zero Emission Week in Islamabad. The event not only celebrated sustainable living but also reinforced the urgent need for climate action across Pakistan.
The rally drew enthusiastic participation from PRCS volunteers, National Headquarters staff, and movement partners. Notable attendees included PRCS Chairperson Mrs Farzhana Naek, Head of IFRC Delegation in Pakistan Mr Farid Abdul Kadir, Secretary General Mr Muhammad Abaid Ullah Khan, and a representative of the German Red Cross.
Cyclists followed designated routes through Islamabad, spreading awareness about reducing carbon footprints and embracing eco-friendly alternatives. Pedal for the Planet served as a public call to adopt greener modes of transport and rethink consumption habits. Moreover, it encouraged citizens to take ownership of their environmental impact.
Welcoming the participants, Secretary General Mr Muhammad Abaid Ullah Khan addressed the growing climate challenges facing Pakistan. He emphasized that community-driven efforts are essential to mitigate environmental risks.
Meanwhile, Chairperson Mrs Farzhana Naek delivered a compelling message. “We must change how we live and consume,” she said. “This includes reducing waste, conserving energy, and choosing sustainable transport like cycling, e-vehicles, and public transit. Expanding urban greenery through reforestation is equally vital.”
She added, “Zero Emission Week reminds us that governments, humanitarian organisations, the private sector, and citizens must unite. PRCS is committed to this journey, but it requires every hand and every heart.”
In addition to the rally, PRCS plans to host educational workshops and community outreach sessions throughout the week. These activities aim to empower citizens with practical knowledge on reducing emissions, conserving resources, and building climate-resilient communities. Furthermore, they align with PRCS’s broader mission to promote sustainable development and humanitarian leadership.
As a result, the Pedal for the Planet rally reaffirmed PRCS’s dedication to climate awareness, community engagement, and global solidarity. Therefore, initiatives like this inspire collective action and hope for a greener, healthier future.
