IAEA Praises Pakistan’s Partnership and Progress in Peaceful Nuclear Programme

Pakistan’s nuclear energy progress received international recognition at the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, commended Pakistan’s steady advancement and close cooperation with the Agency.

After meeting Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Mr. Grossi shared a message on social media. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the conference. He highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in expanding civil nuclear energy, especially the construction of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5). He also recalled witnessing the first concrete pouring at the site in February 2025. According to him, this marked a major milestone in Pakistan’s clean energy efforts.

In addition, both leaders reviewed ongoing collaboration under various IAEA initiatives. These included Atoms4Food, which applies nuclear technology to improve crop yields, food safety, and pest control. They also discussed Rays of Hope, an initiative that expands access to nuclear medicine and cancer care across the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Grossi praised Pakistan’s active role in capacity-building, training, and applying nuclear knowledge for socio-economic development. He described Pakistan as a key partner in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

Dr. Anwar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful nuclear applications. He emphasized that PAEC’s power plants follow the highest safety standards. These facilities contribute reliable, low-carbon electricity to the national grid. Furthermore, he noted that PAEC’s work aligns with the IAEA’s mission to promote nuclear technology for peace, health, and prosperity.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Pakistan’s contributions to regional initiatives. Pakistani experts continue to share their knowledge with other Member States in the Asia-Pacific region.

Ultimately, Pakistan’s nuclear energy progress reflects the country’s resolve to work with the IAEA and Member States. Through peaceful nuclear cooperation, Pakistan aims to support sustainable development and improve quality of life across the region.
