The Government of Pakistan has announced significant measures to address the country’s plastic waste problem and enhance environmental protection. Federal Minister for Climate Change, Musaddiq Malik, told journalists in an informal conversation that the Monsoon 2026 project will be handed over to the provinces for implementation and will also undergo a thorough audit. Efforts will be increased at the provincial level to resolve climate-related issues.
Monitoring and audits to strengthen provincial climate action
The minister emphasized that the Ministry of Climate Change will now consistently monitor such projects and provide regular reports. He highlighted that globally, 85% of green finance is obtained by countries that produce the most carbon, stressing the need for Pakistan to increase its participation in this sector.
Policy reforms and plastic recycling incentives
He further explained that a comprehensive policy-level program is being developed, which includes the registration of plastic recycling factories, financial incentives for the private sector, and measures to highlight Pakistan’s role on the international stage. Irresponsible factories and markets producing plastic waste pose a threat to human health and the environment. To tackle this, the concept of “Plastic Credits” will be introduced, allowing individuals and companies worldwide to financially support recycling initiatives.
Employment opportunities and environmental justice
Additionally, the federal minister stated that the program will create employment opportunities for underprivileged communities while ensuring proper collection, processing, and recycling of plastic waste. The initiative will also be presented at global forums, showcasing Pakistan’s commitment to environmental justice.
Boosting Pakistan’s global standing through climate action
According to the minister, these measures will not only address domestic environmental challenges but will also strengthen Pakistan’s international standing and promote sustainable environmental change through collaboration with industry.
