ISLAMABAD, November 3, 2026: Education experts have urged Pakistani universities to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly, warning that excessive reliance on the technology could weaken students’ critical thinking, creativity and independent research skills.

The call came during a Vice Chancellors’ Roundtable Discussion at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), held as part of the five-day 29th Sustainable Development Conference organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).

Vice chancellors, educationists and international experts discussed how AI could improve teaching, research, academic support and university administration while raising concerns about its potential impact on academic integrity.

Participants emphasised that universities must establish clear policies governing AI use, ensuring transparency, accountability and ethical standards across academic activities.

They maintained that artificial intelligence should support teachers and students rather than replace independent thinking, creativity or intellectual effort.

The speakers also called for updated university curricula, improved research facilities, teacher training and stronger digital literacy programmes to prepare students for emerging technological challenges.

They stressed that critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and responsible technology use should remain central to higher education.

Speaking at the discussion, AIOU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in strengthening distance education and improving academic support for students.

He said technological advancements could enhance educational opportunities, but universities must ensure that AI adoption does not compromise academic integrity, creative thinking or educational values.

The roundtable brought together SDPI Executive Director Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Beaconhouse National University Vice Chancellor Dr. Moeed Yusuf, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute Rector Professor Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid and Fatima Jinnah Women University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Bushra Mirza.

Other participants included University of Sindh Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri, Dr. Anil Salman of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute, Professor Dr. Aneela Kamal of Women University Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Professor Dr. Mustansar Ali Aznfar of the University of East London, who joined online.

The session was moderated by Dr. Fariha Armughan.
