Pakistan-Türkiye cultural ties highlighted at academic event in Ankara

ANKARA, May 12: An academic and cultural event focusing on Pakistan-Türkiye relations and shared historical ties was held in Ankara through a collaboration between the Embassy of Pakistan and Ankara University.

The event, titled “Pakistan Türkiye Relations: Cultural Interaction from Khilafat Movement to Present Day,” brought together parliamentarians, diplomats, academics, students, and members of civil society to discuss the longstanding cultural and historical relationship between the two countries.

Among the speakers were Pakistan’s Ambassador to Türkiye Yousaf Junaid, Turkish parliamentarians Ali Şahin and Burhan Kayatürk, Ankara University Dean Prof. Dr. İrfan Albayrak, and Urdu Department Chairperson Prof. Dr. Asuman Belen Özcan.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Yousaf Junaid said Pakistan and Türkiye share deep-rooted relations based on common history, cultural links, and mutual respect.

He highlighted historical connections dating back centuries, including ties linked to the Mughal era, and also pointed to linguistic similarities between Urdu and Turkish.

The ambassador also appreciated the role of Ankara University’s Urdu Department in promoting Urdu language and literature and strengthening academic cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye.

Speakers emphasize cultural and academic cooperation

Turkish parliamentarian Ali Şahin shared his experiences of visiting Pakistan and described the relationship between the two countries as unique and deeply valued.

Burhan Kayatürk also spoke about his student life in Pakistan and highlighted the continued solidarity between Islamabad and Ankara.

Prof. Dr. İrfan Albayrak stressed the importance of academic collaboration in preserving and promoting shared cultural heritage, while Prof. Dr. Asuman Belen Özcan reaffirmed Ankara University’s commitment to expanding educational and cultural exchanges.

The event also featured cultural performances by Pakistani students, including poetry recitations, Qawwali performances, traditional dances, and cultural exhibitions.

Participants concluded the event by reaffirming support for further strengthening Pakistan-Türkiye cooperation in cultural, academic, and people-to-people exchanges.
