ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will stop issuing machine-readable passports (MRPs) from October 15, 2026, with only electronic passports (e-passports) to be issued for new applications and renewals, according to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports.
The new system will be implemented simultaneously at passport offices across Pakistan and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad.
What Will Happen to Existing Passports?
Existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until their stated expiry dates. Holders will not be required to replace their current passports immediately and will need to obtain an e-passport when their existing document expires or when they apply for a new passport or renewal after the new system takes effect.
The directive follows information shared by the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York, stating that from October 15, all citizens applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one will be issued an e-passport.
What Is an e-Passport?
An e-passport contains an embedded electronic microchip that stores the holder’s biometric and personal information. The data can be electronically verified through compatible immigration systems.
The transition is aimed at modernising Pakistan’s travel-document system, strengthening passport security and facilitating immigration procedures for Pakistani travellers at international airports.
