Islamabad — Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani reaffirmed that Pakistan has consistently supported a peaceful and lasting resolution of the Kashmir issue, in line with United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
In a message issued on the occasion of Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination Day, observed on January 5, Gilani said the date holds historical significance as it marks the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan in 1949, formally recognizing the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their own future.
He noted that the resolution established the international character of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which is why the issue continues to remain on the agenda of the global community. Gilani said that despite the passage of more than seven decades, the Kashmiri people have yet to be allowed to exercise their internationally recognized right to self-determination.
The Senate chairman expressed concern over what he described as India’s efforts to alter the demographic structure of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, stating that such actions violate international law and basic human values. He added that the unilateral measures taken on August 5, 2019, undermined the spirit of United Nations resolutions and contributed to further instability in the region.
Gilani also drew attention to the heavy military presence in the disputed territory, saying that continued repression and restrictions point to serious human rights concerns. He remarked that while attempts are being made to suppress dissent, the resolve of the Kashmiri people has not diminished.
Reiterating Pakistan’s position, the chairman said Islamabad remains committed to a just and durable settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the January 5, 1949 UN resolution. He urged the international community to play a more active role in ensuring that the Kashmiri people are granted their promised right to self-determination.
