ISLAMABAD — The government is considering alternative trade routes and financial support measures to protect Pakistan’s potato exports as regional instability disrupts traditional export corridors, officials said after a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The discussion took place during the fourth meeting of the Committee on Potato Export, which reviewed the changing export environment and explored urgent steps to safeguard farmers’ income and maintain Pakistan’s agricultural export momentum.
Officials informed the meeting that the ongoing conflict-related situation in Iran has made key transit routes unsafe, while the closure of the Afghanistan border has further restricted overland access to Central Asian markets. Limited access to certain Gulf shipping routes has also complicated export operations.
China route considered for Central Asian access
Participants were told that, under the current circumstances, the most practical alternative route to reach Central Asian markets is through China. Authorities are engaging relevant stakeholders to facilitate smoother transit arrangements along this corridor in order to maintain export flows.
The committee noted that exporters are facing higher transportation and freight costs due to the regional disruptions.
Government plans subsidies for exporters
To offset these additional costs, the minister said the government is considering targeted transport subsidies and concessional freight support for exporters. The aim is to help maintain the competitiveness of Pakistani potatoes in international markets despite rising logistical expenses.
Efforts to diversify export markets
The meeting also discussed expanding export destinations to reduce reliance on traditional markets. With some Gulf routes facing temporary restrictions, officials said the Ministry is exploring opportunities in Far Eastern countries.
Indonesia was identified as a potential market where demand prospects for Pakistani potatoes could be strengthened through engagement with trade representatives and importers.
Rana Tanveer Hussain said the government remains focused on protecting farmers’ incomes, stabilizing domestic agricultural markets and strengthening Pakistan’s agricultural export sector despite regional challenges.
