KARACHI, September 24 — Pakistan Navy marked World Maritime Day 2026 with a series of activities across the country, reaffirming its commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental sustainability and the sustainable development of Pakistan’s maritime sector.
The observance brought together Pakistan Navy personnel, educational institutions and maritime organisations as part of wider efforts to highlight the importance of the oceans and shipping to Pakistan’s economy and global trade.
World Maritime Day is observed annually under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recognise the vital role of shipping and maritime activities in facilitating international trade, connectivity and economic prosperity.
This year’s theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” highlights the importance of translating policies, regulations and international commitments into effective action across the maritime sector.
In his message on the occasion, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf extended his greetings to Pakistan and the international maritime community.
The Naval Chief paid tribute to seafarers, maritime professionals, fishermen and coastal communities, acknowledging their contribution to maritime connectivity and national economic development.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf stressed that sustainable growth of Pakistan’s maritime sector requires a coordinated national approach involving relevant government institutions, industry, academia and other maritime stakeholders.
Pakistan Navy also organised beach-cleaning drives, awareness programmes and educational activities across the country to mark World Maritime Day.
Essay-writing and speech competitions were held at Pakistan Navy educational institutions, while an awareness campaign was organised at the Pakistan Maritime Museum in Karachi.
Beach-cleaning campaigns were also conducted in Karachi and other coastal areas, highlighting the importance of protecting the marine environment and encouraging responsible use of maritime resources.
The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCE) in Lahore and the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) in Karachi organised seminars focusing on contemporary maritime opportunities and challenges.
The activities formed part of Pakistan Navy’s efforts to promote greater public awareness of the country’s maritime potential while encouraging cooperation among stakeholders for a secure, sustainable and economically productive maritime sector.
