ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to safeguard national shipping and maritime trade routes amid concerns over the evolving regional maritime security environment and potential disruptions to key sea lanes.

According to an official statement issued on March 9, the operation aims to ensure the uninterrupted flow of Pakistan’s maritime trade and energy supplies by protecting critical Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs), which carry the majority of the country’s imports and exports.

The navy said escort operations are being carried out in coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) to ensure the safe movement of merchant vessels in regional waters.

Officials noted that nearly 90 percent of Pakistan’s trade is conducted through sea routes, making the security of maritime corridors essential for the country’s economic stability and energy supply chains.

Escort operations underway

As part of the operation, Pakistan Navy ships are currently escorting two merchant vessels to ensure their safe transit. One of the escorted ships is scheduled to arrive at Karachi port later on Monday, according to the statement.

The navy said it is closely monitoring the regional maritime situation and maintaining oversight of merchant vessel movements to prevent potential disruptions.

Focus on maritime security

Authorities said the operation is part of broader efforts to address emerging maritime security challenges and ensure safe navigation for commercial shipping.

Pakistan Navy officials stated that the force remains prepared to respond to any developments affecting maritime safety and trade routes while continuing to support regional maritime security.
