ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has launched a new feeder shipping service connecting Karachi Port with the United Arab Emirates, a move officials say will strengthen maritime connectivity and support the country’s growing trade needs.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the initiative on Friday, saying the service will link Karachi with the UAE ports of Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, two major regional transshipment hubs. The development is expected to help Pakistani exporters and importers maintain reliable access to global container shipping networks.

According to the minister, the service will operate through Karachi Gateway Terminal (Private) Limited (KGTL), a key business partner of Karachi Port Trust. The first vessel under the service arrived at the terminal on the evening of March 11, officially marking the start of regular operations.

The new shipping link is designed to support supply chain continuity and provide Pakistan’s trading community with more dependable connections to international markets. Cargo routed through Fujairah and Khor Fakkan will benefit from the UAE’s advanced logistics infrastructure and established global shipping routes.

Strengthening regional maritime connectivity

Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed (Retd.), Chairman of Karachi Port Trust, said the new feeder service enhances the port’s connectivity with major regional hubs and supports Pakistan’s expanding trade requirements.

He added that stronger maritime links with the UAE will facilitate smoother cargo movement and offer greater operational flexibility for importers and exporters.

Khurram Aziz Khan, Chief Executive Officer of Karachi Gateway Terminal (Private) Limited, said the service reflects the terminal’s commitment to improving Pakistan’s maritime connectivity and strengthening its role in international trade.

He noted that direct connections between Karachi and UAE transshipment hubs will allow businesses to access global shipping networks more efficiently.

Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said Pakistan’s economy relies heavily on maritime trade, and stronger links with regional shipping hubs will improve resilience for exporters, importers, and supply chains.
