Pakistan, Iran reaffirm commitment to strengthening agricultural cooperation

Islamabad, February 17, 2026: Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in agriculture and food security during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad.

The meeting was attended by Iran’s Minister of Agriculture Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan. Both sides described the discussions as constructive and forward-looking, reflecting the shared resolve of the two neighboring countries to further strengthen economic ties.

Participants highlighted the longstanding and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran, rooted in shared history, cultural affinity and geographical proximity. Satisfaction was expressed over existing engagements, with both sides agreeing to deepen collaboration in agriculture and food security.

Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized the importance of institutional cooperation between relevant ministries, noting that agriculture remains a cornerstone for food security, rural development and economic stability in both countries. He stressed the need to enhance technical cooperation, promote skills exchange, and strengthen linkages between departments and research institutions.

Iran’s agriculture minister appreciated Pakistan’s efforts toward agricultural development and underscored the importance of closer cooperation in horticulture, livestock, crop management and modern agricultural practices. He noted that the two countries’ capabilities complement each other and can generate significant benefits through structured dialogue and joint initiatives.

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan highlighted the need for improved coordination, facilitation mechanisms and operational-level alignment to make cooperation more effective. He emphasized that sustained engagement and mutual understanding are key to unlocking the full potential of bilateral relations.

The ministers reviewed ongoing collaboration under existing agreements, including cooperation in veterinary and animal health, as well as plant protection and quarantine. Both sides agreed on the importance of effective implementation of agreed frameworks and the timely finalization of pending institutional matters to maintain momentum.

Discussions also covered agricultural trade, joint research, capacity building, and facilitation for farmers and agribusiness stakeholders. Given shared climate and environmental challenges, both countries stressed the importance of cooperation in water conservation, high-value crops, livestock improvement and sustainable agricultural practices.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the ministers reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation through regular engagement, stronger institutional frameworks and coordinated implementation of agreed measures. Both sides expressed confidence that closer collaboration in agriculture and food security would further enhance Pakistan-Iran relations and contribute to regional stability and shared prosperity.
