ISLAMABAD, September 30, 2026: Preparations are reportedly complete for the formal launch of the Pakistan Hockey League (PHL), with the league expected to begin its inaugural season in 2027 as part of efforts to develop a more professional and commercially sustainable structure for the country’s national sport.
According to details reported in Pakistani media, the formal launch is scheduled for October 14, 2026, in Islamabad, with the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Media Cast working on preparations for the league’s first season.
The PHF had earlier confirmed that the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Hockey League is planned for the first quarter of 2027, describing the initiative as part of its broader efforts to revive hockey through grassroots development, professional coaching, improved structures and greater international exposure.
The proposed league is expected to follow a franchise-based model, with reports suggesting that between six and eight teams could participate in the first season. The format is intended to create opportunities for Pakistani players to compete alongside international talent.
The participation of international players could provide Pakistani athletes with greater exposure to different playing styles and professional standards, while also creating opportunities for local coaches and hockey professionals to work alongside experienced international specialists.
The league is also expected to attract private-sector participation through franchise ownership and corporate sponsorships. Potential commercial areas include broadcasting and digital content, merchandising, advertising, hospitality, ticketing and grassroots development programmes.
A professional franchise-based competition could provide an additional platform for young Pakistani players while creating a commercial ecosystem around domestic hockey.
The initiative comes as the PHF continues efforts to expand competitive opportunities for players at different levels. Its 2026-27 domestic calendar includes national competitions for women, boys and senior players, with an emphasis on grassroots participation and talent identification.
Pakistan has a long history of success in international hockey, including Olympic, World Cup and Asian Games titles. The challenge now is to develop a sustainable system that can translate that legacy into regular competitive opportunities, player development and stronger professional structures.
The proposed Pakistan Hockey League is being positioned as part of that transition — from a predominantly departmental and national competition structure toward a model incorporating professional competition, private investment, international exposure, sports science, youth development and commercial sustainability.
Meanwhile, PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani recently said Pakistan would host several international hockey events over the coming months and confirmed that a hockey league was planned for next year as part of efforts to further develop the sport domestically.
