LAHORE, September 18: Pakistan plans to further expand its electric vehicle industry while increasing local production of EV components, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan said on Friday.
Speaking to the media during the Pakistan Auto Parts Show 2026 at the Lahore Expo Centre, Khan said the government was taking measures to promote industrial growth, increase domestic production and encourage business activity.
He said Pakistan would not only assemble electric vehicles locally but would also manufacture their components in the country, strengthening the domestic auto parts industry and creating employment opportunities.
Khan urged Pakistani manufacturers to look beyond the domestic market and produce vehicles for international markets, saying the industry should work towards developing some of the world’s most affordable vehicles.
He said the entry of more brands into Pakistan’s EV market would increase competition while generating new employment opportunities.
The adviser said auto parts manufacturers were playing an important role in Pakistan’s economy and the sector was already providing employment to millions of people.
According to Khan, 124 motorcycle licences have been issued in Pakistan’s electric vehicle sector, while more companies are seeking licences to enter the EV market.
Highlighting the expansion of Pakistan’s automobile industry, he said the country had only three factories around 40 years ago, compared with 15 factories currently producing vehicles across 53 brands.
Khan said the government’s focus was increasingly on hybrid electric vehicles.
He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wanted affordable vehicles to be manufactured in Pakistan.
Following his media interaction, the adviser visited the auto parts show and received a briefing from relevant officials.
