Islamabad — First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari met Ethiopian Ambassador Dr Jemal Beker Abdula at Aiwan-e-Sadr on his farewell visit, reaffirming the growing strength of Pakistan-Ethiopia ties across climate action, trade, and cultural diplomacy.
During the meeting, Aseefa Bhutto praised the Ambassador’s efforts to strengthen bilateral relations. She recalled that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the first Pakistani Prime Minister to visit Ethiopia. Therefore, she emphasized the importance of building on historic ties rooted in mutual respect and shared values.
Moreover, the First Lady highlighted Pakistan’s climate challenges. She shared updates on flood recovery and reforestation efforts in her constituency. In addition, she proposed collaboration on climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and early warning systems. These areas align with Pakistan’s Green Initiative and Ethiopia’s successful reforestation model.
She also congratulated Ethiopia on its full BRICS membership. Furthermore, she welcomed expanding economic linkages. These include the Bilateral Trade Agreement, the upcoming Single Country Exhibition in Addis Ababa, and the resumption of direct flights between Karachi and Addis Ababa. As a result, connectivity and people-to-people exchange are steadily improving.
Ambassador Dr Jemal Beker Abdula thanked Aseefa Bhutto for her leadership. He described Pakistan as a vital partner in the evolving global landscape. Additionally, he highlighted Ethiopia’s emergence as a dynamic market and shared details of its reforestation success—48 billion seedlings planted in seven years.
He also invited the First Lady to visit Ethiopia and collaborate with its First Lady on initiatives supporting women, children, and environmental resilience.
In closing, both leaders expressed optimism about the future of Pakistan–Ethiopia ties, especially in areas of sustainable development and regional diplomacy.
