KARACHI, September 18: Pakistan Customs officials at Jinnah International Airport have foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle approximately 580 grams of hashish out of Pakistan and arrested two passengers travelling to Dubai, officials said.
The seizure was made at around 10pm on September 17 when a Customs machine operator deployed at the international departures area detected suspicious baggage during routine screening, according to Pakistan Customs.
The baggage belonged to two passengers, a husband and wife, who were scheduled to travel to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on FlyDubai flight FZ-330.
Following the screening alert, Customs officials subjected both pieces of baggage to a detailed examination.
During the search, officials found two wooden jewellery boxes containing specially designed concealments, according to the statement.
Further examination led to the recovery of approximately 290 grams of hashish, or charas, from each box, taking the total gross quantity to around 580 grams.
Pakistan Customs estimated the value of the seized narcotics at approximately Rs2 million.
FIR Registered, Investigation Underway
The recovered contraband was seized under the relevant provisions of law, while an FIR was registered under applicable provisions of the Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) Act, Customs said.
Further investigation is underway to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt and identify whether any other individuals were involved.
Pakistan Customs said it continues to strengthen enforcement at international entry and exit points through risk-based profiling, advanced baggage screening and targeted examination mechanisms.
The department said the measures are aimed at preventing the smuggling of narcotics and other prohibited and restricted goods while safeguarding Pakistan’s economic and national interests.
