ISLAMABAD, Jan 7 — Pakistan and China have agreed to strengthen security cooperation and institutional coordination following a high-level meeting in Beijing between Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Chinese Interior Minister Wang Xiaohong.

The two ministers held a three-and-a-half-hour session at China’s Ministry of Public Security headquarters, discussing counterterrorism, police training exchanges, cybercrime prevention, and broader areas of bilateral collaboration. Officials confirmed that both sides reached consensus on holding a Joint Working Group meeting every three months, while the interior ministers will meet annually to review progress.

Focus on security and counterterrorism

Chinese Interior Minister Wang Xiaohong expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s security measures for Chinese nationals and development projects, praising Islamabad’s efforts in internal security and counterterrorism. He said China valued Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and emphasized the importance of joint rapid-response mechanisms against crime and extremism.

The ministers also agreed to expand police training and exchange programmes, while discussing Islamabad–Beijing sister-city cooperation and strategies to strengthen professional capacity of law enforcement agencies.

Pakistan’s commitments

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi assured the Chinese side that protecting Chinese citizens and joint projects in Pakistan remains a top priority. He announced the establishment of a special protection unit in Islamabad and welcomed Chinese cooperation in tackling cybercrime. Naqvi also sought support from Chinese institutions to strengthen Pakistan’s National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency, noting that China’s AI-based technology could play a vital role in addressing emerging security challenges.

“Pakistan and China share an unbreakable bond of enduring cooperation, and no one can create a wedge between us,” Naqvi said, while extending an invitation to his Chinese counterpart to visit Pakistan. He also conveyed goodwill messages from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to the Chinese leadership.

Strengthening bilateral ties

Wang Xiaohong invited Naqvi to attend the Global Security Cooperation Forum in China later this year and reaffirmed that Pakistan and China remain strategic partners. He hosted a luncheon in honour of the visiting delegation, underscoring Beijing’s readiness to expand cooperation at all levels.

Senior Chinese officials present included Vice Ministers Xu Datong and Yu Xiuhe, Beijing Deputy Mayor Cen Yuanbiao, and directors from the General Office, Counterterrorism Department, and International Cooperation. The Pakistani delegation included Federal Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, DG National Police Academy Muhammad Idrees, DG National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency Syed Khurram Ali, Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, and Islamabad IGP Ali Nasir Rizvi.
