ISLAMABAD, October 29, 2026: Pakistan has increased the cash transaction reporting threshold for banks from Rs2 million to Rs3 million, introducing changes to its financial monitoring framework as part of efforts to strengthen oversight and combat money laundering.

Under the revised threshold, banks will be required to report daily cash transactions exceeding Rs3 million to the Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU). Previously, the reporting requirement applied to transactions exceeding Rs2 million.

According to sources, the government has also decided to introduce further changes to the country’s anti-money laundering framework to improve the monitoring of financial transactions.

As part of these measures, provincial anti-corruption agencies are expected to receive additional powers to support efforts against money laundering.

However, the granting of these powers will be subject to the completion of relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Virtual assets brought under anti-money laundering framework

The government has also decided to include virtual assets within the country’s anti-money laundering monitoring system.

According to sources, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority has been granted powers under anti-money laundering legislation to strengthen oversight of transactions involving digital assets.

The move is aimed at improving financial transparency and making anti-money laundering measures more effective.

The revised cash reporting threshold and proposed regulatory changes form part of broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s financial monitoring and compliance framework.
