NORTH WAZIRISTAN: Torrential monsoon rains have triggered devastating flash floods across parts of North Waziristan, causing widespread destruction to agricultural land, protective infrastructure and construction equipment, while leaving local communities facing severe financial hardship.

According to local residents, the worst-hit area is Hamzoni, located on the outskirts of Miranshah, where powerful floodwaters swept through the region after days of heavy rainfall. The strong currents washed away hundreds of acres of fertile agricultural land, destroying standing crops and eroding valuable farmland that serves as the primary source of income for local families.

Residents said the force of the floodwaters caused extensive soil erosion, leaving large sections of cultivated land completely submerged or washed away. Farmers who had invested months of labour and significant financial resources into their crops now fear substantial economic losses and an uncertain future.

The flash floods also severely damaged flood protection infrastructure. Protective embankments, constructed to safeguard farmland and nearby settlements from seasonal flooding, were unable to withstand the powerful currents and were completely destroyed. Local residents warned that the collapse of these structures has significantly increased the vulnerability of the area to future floods.

In addition to the damage to farmland and embankments, heavy construction machinery worth millions of rupees, deployed for the Hamzoni Protection Wall project, was swept away by the raging floodwaters. Residents said excavators and other equipment being used for the flood protection project were carried away by the current, bringing construction work to a complete halt and causing substantial financial losses.

The destruction has left many farming families struggling to recover. Residents described the disaster as one of the most damaging floods the area has witnessed in recent years, saying it has affected livelihoods, food security and the local economy. Many families now fear they will be unable to cultivate their land during the upcoming farming season unless immediate assistance is provided.

Affected residents expressed disappointment over what they described as the lack of an immediate official response. They urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), district administration and other relevant departments to visit the affected areas without delay, conduct a transparent assessment of the damage and provide emergency financial assistance and compensation to the victims.

They also called for the immediate reconstruction of the destroyed embankments and the completion of the Hamzoni Protection Wall project to prevent similar disasters in the future. Residents stressed that strengthening flood protection infrastructure is essential to safeguarding agricultural land, public property and local communities from recurring flash floods.

Local elders warned that if timely preventive measures are not taken, future monsoon rains could result in even greater destruction across North Waziristan. They appealed to the authorities to treat the situation as an emergency and implement long-term flood mitigation measures to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure throughout the region.
