Islamabad — Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to accelerate preparations for launching an Air Ambulance Service on motorways and highways. The initiative aims to ensure timely medical aid and swift hospital transfers for accident victims.
He issued these instructions while presiding over a high-level meeting at the NHA Headquarters. The Federal Secretary for Communications, Chairman NHA, and other senior officials also attended the session.
The minister emphasized that the service will begin with two helicopters. He instructed officials to build helipads at major hospitals for safe and quick emergency landings. Since helicopters require minimal space, they can significantly reduce response time.
Abdul Aleem Khan stated that the government is prioritizing road safety. It is working to control vehicle speeds, enforce fitness checks, and improve driver training. He added that the Air Ambulance Service will play a vital role in saving lives. Therefore, he urged officials to coordinate responsibly with relevant departments.
Moreover, the minister highlighted NHA’s financial progress. He noted that revenue has doubled over the past year due to improved management and policy reforms. As a result, the additional funds will support public safety, traveler convenience, and infrastructure upgrades.
“Our goal is to make the NHA financially self-sufficient,” he said. “Every extra rupee generated will go toward projects that directly serve the public.”
He reaffirmed that improving road efficiency, comfort, and safety remains the Authority’s top priority. This will be achieved through sustained planning and effective implementation.
During the meeting, senior officials briefed the minister on ongoing and proposed NHA projects. In addition, they finalized several key policy decisions to boost operational performance and fast-track the Air Ambulance initiative.
