The New Zealand government has granted human rights to a mountain considered sacred by local tribes. The Taranaki mountain is viewed as an ancestral figure by the Māori tribes, who have long advocated for human rights for the mountain.
Yesterday, New Zealand’s parliament passed a bill declaring that any damage or destruction to Taranaki mountain will be punishable with the same penalties as harm to a human being.
This follows a similar law passed in 2014, where the government granted human-like rights to an ancient forest.
