A new study suggests that GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro may offer benefits beyond treating obesity and diabetes, with researchers finding a lower risk of alcohol-related hospitalizations among people using the medications.
The findings, based on an analysis of more than 40,000 medical records in the United States, indicate a possible link between GLP-1 medications and reduced alcohol-related health complications. However, researchers caution that additional studies are needed before drawing definitive conclusions.
Analysis Covered More Than 40,000 Patients
The study reviewed the medical records of 40,703 people who began treatment with semaglutide- or tirzepatide-based medications between January 2018 and December 2024.
Researchers analyzed data from four separate studies involving patients with obesity, diabetes, and alcohol use-related conditions.
Lower Risk of Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions
According to the findings, people using GLP-1 medications had a 26% lower risk of alcohol-related hospitalization compared with patients taking other diabetes medications.
Among individuals using the drugs for weight management, the risk of alcohol-related hospital admissions was 32% lower than among those using other anti-obesity medications.
Researchers Call for Further Studies
GLP-1 medications work by mimicking hormones that help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce appetite. Earlier research has also suggested they may influence brain pathways linked to alcohol cravings.
The researchers emphasized that while the results are encouraging, current evidence remains limited and mixed. They said more clinical research is needed to confirm whether these medications can play a role in reducing alcohol-related harm.
