LIAQUATPUR(ABU HURARA ALVI): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s model bazaar project has suffered from severe negligence, carelessness, and corruption. The Rs 100 million model bazaar project has turned into a display of poor craftsmanship and substandard engineering. According to details, on the orders of the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Rahim Yar Khan District Council launched the model bazaar project in Liaquatpur four months ago, designed in the Turkish style, for which the main and rail bazaars were demolished.
During this period, shopkeepers, buyers, and passersby not only faced extreme inconvenience, but also dozens of people were injured after falling into pits dug during the rainy season. The alignment of the pillar foundations by the contractor was not done correctly, and according to the plan.
It has been reported that when the engineer representing the consulting firm visited the site, it was found that most of the foundations were out of alignment and not properly placed. The contractor decided to dismantle the cement and gravel foundations under the “Jugar” system and erect pillars after welding the existing steel. If the pillars are built as per the current efforts of the contractor and relevant staff, this model bazaar project will stand as a rare example of poor architecture.
Upon receiving the information, Member of the Provincial Assembly Chaudhry Mahmood Ahmed ordered to halt the work, but the influential contractor continued regardless. Local citizens and traders, Waqar Ahmed, Taj Ghous, Muhammad Ashraf, Pervaiz Hussain Tabassum, and others have appealed to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Commissioner Bahawalpur, and Deputy Commissioner Rahim Yar Khan to take notice.
On the complaints of citizens, SDO District Council Muhammad Ali Sarwar inspected the model bazaar project on a holiday and directed the contractor to correct the alignment. He said that the pillars whose alignment is not correct will be dismantled down to the J-bolt and rebuilt under the direction of the Urban Unit Consultant and the department. There will be no compromise on the quality of projects under the supervision of the district government, and negligent contractors will be recommended for blacklisting.
