KARACHI: The Naya Nazimabad Independence Day Sports Festival 2026 opened with a colourful ceremony on August 9, featuring flag-hoisting, a patriotic performance, the release of pigeons and a cake-cutting ceremony to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.
The opening ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. Twelve-year-old student Ayat also performed a patriotic song, which was warmly appreciated by the audience.
Festival Features Multiple Sports
The festival is hosting competitions in a range of sports, including cricket, football, snooker, squash, tennis, padel, table tennis, swimming, badminton, skating and archery. The competitions will continue until August 14.
A musical concert and fireworks display are also scheduled for the night of August 13 as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Syed Muhammad Talha, President of Naya Nazimabad Gymkhana and chief guest, said the festival was being organised to celebrate Independence Day with enthusiasm while encouraging greater participation in sports.
He said Pakistan has considerable sporting talent among its youth and that athletes need greater opportunities, facilities and patronage to reach their potential.
Focus on Youth and Sports Facilities
Talha highlighted Naya Nazimabad’s development as a sports-focused community, saying it offers facilities for more than 20 sports as part of Chairman Arif Habib’s vision of developing a “Sports City.”
He expressed hope that improved sports infrastructure would encourage more young Pakistanis to pursue athletics and eventually represent the country at major international events, including the Olympics.
Ghani Usman, Tariq Iqbal and other speakers also addressed the gathering.
A large number of citizens attended the opening ceremony, including Senior Manager Raheel Karim, Sports Manager Muhammad Asif and Sindh Tennis Association Secretary Khalid Rahmani.
Certificates were distributed among children who participated in the summer camp, while Sajid Irfan, Muhammad Amir, Afra Siddiqui, Syeda Sidra, Safdar Ahmed, Ibrahim Shaikh and Abdul Shakoor, among others, received appreciation awards.
