ISLAMABAD, September 30, 2026: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a NADRA assistant director over allegations that he received Rs120 million to facilitate the restoration of cancelled identity cards of Afghan nationals.
According to the FIA, its Counter Terrorism Wing arrested the NADRA official, identified as Aftab, following an investigation into alleged attempts to restore cancelled Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) belonging to Afghan citizens.
The agency alleges that the suspect received Rs120 million in connection with the restoration of identity cards belonging to 51 Afghan nationals.
Following the arrest, FIA officials also raided the suspect’s residence. The agency said Rs1.9 million in cash was recovered during the search.
The FIA further alleged that the suspect had used the remaining proceeds to purchase plots in Havelian and Islamabad’s G-15 sector. Investigators have reportedly obtained documents relating to the properties as part of the inquiry.
The case adds to a series of FIA investigations involving allegations of fraudulent or irregular identity-document processing by NADRA personnel. The FIA’s mandate includes investigating organisational crimes involving NADRA and other federal institutions.
In July, the FIA also arrested NADRA officials in Karachi over allegations of preparing fraudulent identity documents for Afghan nationals, while another operation in Charsadda involved the arrest of four NADRA officials over alleged illegal CNIC issuance. Those investigations were ongoing at the time of reporting.
The latest investigation remains underway, and the allegations against the arrested official will be subject to the legal process.
