Motorway Toll Plaza Neglect Fuels Road Safety Crisis

Attock (MS Bokhari) —  Motorway toll plaza conditions across Pakistan have sparked public outrage, with commuters blaming authorities for rising road accidents. Over the past year, toll taxes at several plazas have nearly doubled, yet basic safety measures remain ignored.

Despite collecting billions in revenue, officials have failed to repaint lane markings on motorways and national highways. As a result, drivers struggle to identify lanes, especially at night or during poor visibility. This dangerous oversight has turned many motorway toll plaza zones into accident hotspots.

Critics argue that the Federal Minister for Communications appears more focused on revenue than road safety. Allegations suggest that cost-cutting measures have led to the neglect of essential maintenance, including lane repainting. Consequently, both heavy and light vehicle drivers face daily risks while navigating unmarked roads.

In addition, the lack of clear lane guidance has caused frequent collisions, some of them fatal. Public and social circles are now urging Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to personally inspect these roads. They want him to witness firsthand how profit-driven institutions are endangering lives while collecting inflated tolls.

Citizens demand immediate action. Whether the responsibility lies with the National Highway Authority (NHA) or another department, they insist on urgent safety upgrades. Authorities must repaint lane markings, improve signage, and ensure that every motorway toll plaza meets national safety standards.

Meanwhile, commuters continue to face daily hazards. The absence of visible lane divisions forces drivers to guess their positions, increasing the likelihood of accidents. This situation not only threatens lives but also undermines public trust in transport governance.

Therefore, restoring lane visibility and enforcing safety protocols at every motorway toll plaza is critical. The government must prioritize public safety over profit and take swift corrective measures.
